A sport utility vehicle rammed a police car at a downtown Modesto intersection today, injuring a passenger the officer was taking to jail, police said.
Sgt. Brian Findlen said a Ford Explorer "t-boned" the police car about 1:30 p.m. The SUV, driven by a woman and carrying a male passenger, was headed east on I Street while the police car was southbound on 7th Street.
"It is fairly clear that the woman failed to stop for the red signal light," Findlen said.
The only person hurt was the woman who was a passenger in the police car. She was in custody on a driving-under-the-influence charge. She suffered lacerations and will likely have bruises, Findlen said, and was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Last week, a Modesto police car was sheared in two in a collision with a Ford Expedition on Scenic Drive as the officer was hurrying to help another officer requesting aid in pursuing a suspect. No one was hurt.
