Stanislaus County will pay medical bills for a Labrador retriever badly injured by other dogs at the Finch Road shelter.
"I just felt sorry for the dog, so I opted to pay the vet bill for Angel" with county funds, said Annette Patton, animal services director.
The black Lab was mauled by pit bulls when shelter employees "didn't know what they were doing" and put them in the same pen, owner Bobby Williams, 61, of Modesto said in a legal claim.
Williams or family members looked for Angel at the shelter after she disappeared in July, but she wasn't captured until the next day, and an initial scan missed an identification microchip.
Veterinary bills for head, ear and throat injuries came to $1,967, the claim says. County administrators authorized payment, Patton said.
