A woman driving the wrong way on eastbound Interstate 580 on the Altamont Pass caused a crash that closed the road for five hours Thursday morning and frustrated morning commuters, the California Highway Patrol said. The wreck involved a car and two big rigs just west of North Flynn Road, CHP officer Steve Creel said. Officers said Beiru Chen, 52, of Saratoga was traveling west in the eastbound lane about 6:20 a.m. when she lost control and was hit by one of the semis. She suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Castro Valley, the CHP said. One of the big rigs dumped about a third of its 42,000-pound load of contaminated soil. Neither truck driver was injured.
