Michael Bryan Strong, a 40-year-old transient, has been identified as the man shot to death early Saturday in a Modesto alley.
Modesto police said Strong was shot in the head, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.
Lt. Chris Fuzie said Strong had lived in the area about 15 years.
Officers found his body about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in an alley behind the Hope Chest thrift store on the 1200 block of McHenry Avenue, between Orangeburg and Roseburg avenues.

Officers were responding to a report of a man lying on the ground in the alley. Police believe Strong was shot a few hours before officers found him.
Strong had been on probation after a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon, police said, and had additional convictions on his record.
This was Modesto's second homicide this year and Stanislaus County's fourth.
