Student scientists squared off last weekend for a chance to represent their counties in the Northern California Science Olympiad.
Stanislaus County junior high winners were: first place, Hickman Charter's red team; second place, Ustach Middle; and third place, Oakdale Junior High's gold team. Winners in the high school category were: first place, Oakdale High's gold team; second place, Modesto High's crimson team; and third place, Central Catholic High.
More than 550 students representing junior and senior high schools participated in the daylong event.
The Science Olympiad consists of individual and team events that encourage learning in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem solving and technology. Some events require knowledge of scientific facts and concepts, and others rely on science processes, skills or application.
