A 49-year-old Newman man driving a motorcycle died Wednesday when he went off a rural road and crashed into wooden fence bordering Hatfield State Recreation Area, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending family notification.
The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Kelley Road, just east of River Road in Merced County. No other vehicles were involved. The man was driving a 2005 Yamaha Royal Star motorcycle west on Kelley and was wearing a helmet.
The CHP said the motorcycle was traveling fast as it entered a series of curves in the road, and the driver wasn't able to maintain control of the motorcycle.
Never miss a local story.
The motorcycle moved into the eastbound lane and onto the road's shoulder before hitting a 3-foot-tall wooden fence and a nearby tree, according to the CHP.
