Officers arrested a man Tuesday night after witnesses saw him dragging his wife on the ground and trying to push her into their vehicle at a Sonora grocery store parking lot, police said.
Jiawei Hu, 24, of Sonora, was arrested on suspicion of felony attempted kidnapping and misdemeanor domestic battery, according to Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson.
The incident occurred about 9:45 p.m. at the Safeway parking lot in the 1200 block of Sanguinetti Road.
Officers arrived at the grocery store and spoke with witnesses, Hu and his wife, 25-year-old Zhou Ping.
The officers learned Hu and Ping were arguing about food in the parking lot, and she started walking away from him.
Stinson said Hu grabbed his wife's arm and started pulling her toward their vehicle.
Ping fell to the pavement and continued trying to pull away from Hu. He then picked her up off of the ground, Stinson said, and carried her to the vehicle. He said Hu forcefully tried to push his wife into the vehicle as she continued to resist.
At this point, a witness intervened and separated Hu and his wife until officers arrived.
