Calaveras County coroner officials on Wednesday confirmed the identity of Charles "Chuck" Swanson, who died Monday when the small plane he was piloting crashed west of Angels Camp.
Swanson, 59, of Modesto was a longtime valley business owner and an experienced pilot.
He was flying a Cessna 172 registered to Michael Monzingo of Oakdale.
The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m., and authorities found the crash site 150 yards up a hill from Pool Station Road.
Federal officials have recovered the wreckage, and the crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Swanson was the owner of Design Metals, which manufactures food processing equipment in Ceres.
His company designed and built items from food elevators to huge blenders, counting See's Candies and other confectioners along with Del Monte, E.&J.
Gallo Winery and Franzia Winery among his customers.
