At least $20,000 will be given to eight local charities in celebration of American Chevrolet's 20th anniversary.
The dealership, at 4742 McHenry Ave. in Modesto, is holding its 20/20 Give-A-Way through the end of the month. Participating charities are the Center for Human Services, the Children's Crisis Center of Stanislaus County, the Society for Handicapped Children and Adults, Community Hospice, Sierra Vista Child & Family Services, Haven Women's Center of Stanislaus, Habitat for Humanity Stanislaus County and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Children.
When people test-drive a new Chevrolet, they can fill out a form for the organization of their choice to be entered into a random drawing for $1,000. The cutoff is
3 p.m. July 31; at 4 p.m. that day, 20 drawings will be held to award the money.
"Every charity that's participating gets at least $1,000," said American Chevrolet President David Halvorson, so if a charity -- or more than one -- doesn't win in the random drawings, the dealership will award it $1,000 on top of the base $20,000 giveaway.
"We went through a list of charities locally and tried to pick ones that did the most good for the general populace," Halvorson said. "When you look at Hospice, the Center for Human Services, groups like those serve people from all walks of life."
The list of charities easily could have been much longer, he said, but the number was kept small to ensure that the giveaway was worth the while of the groups participating. "The charities are encouraging their supporters to visit American Chevrolet," he said. "We've had a good turnout, and it seems to be building as the month goes on. I think we'll have 100, 150 test drives before all is said and done."
"A cornerstone of our business philosophy throughout the years has been community involvement," Halvorson wrote in the American Chevrolet newsletter. "This program is a great way to introduce our world-class products to our neighbors while helping our local nonprofits."
