The Yosemite Community College District has bought 5.9 acres in Angels Camp to build a Calaveras County satellite campus of Columbia College.
The junior college has rented classroom space near the Glory Hole shopping center for several years and now provides classes at Bret Harte High School. About 840 students from Calaveras County attend Columbia, 22 percent of the junior college's enrollment.
Money for the $615,000 land purchase came from Measure E bonds. The total project has a budget of $7.6 million and is expected to be finished in spring of 2012.
"Today is just wonderful news for Calaveras County," said Pat Dean, a YCCD trustee, via e-mail. "Providing a permanent presence in Calaveras County has been long in coming."
The college bought two adjoining undeveloped parcels on Murphys Grade Road within the Angels Camp city limit.
The YCCD oversees Columbia College and Modesto Junior College.
