An inmate was found dead in his cell early Wednesday at the Stanislaus County Jail in downtown Modesto, the Sheriff’s Department reported.
About 5 a.m., jail staff found Richard Taylor, 27, of Salinas, unresponsive in his cell.
Taylor was booked at the jail facility on June 24 after Turlock police arrested him on drug charges, sheriff’s officials said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the inmate’s death. Taylor was being held in a cell with no other inmates.
The detectives have determined Taylor had not been involved in an altercation with jail staff or other inmates.
Drug paraphernalia was found in his cell during a subsequent search.
The cause of death cannot be determined until toxicology results are available.
