Thomas Downey High School in Modesto will retire the No. 13 jersey once worn by Daniel Hyde, an Army officer who was killed in action in Iraq on March 7.
The jersey will be retired in a ceremony at halftime of tonight's game between Downey and Golden Valley. The ceremony will close with the singing of the Downey Hymn by the school choir.
Hyde, who graduated from Downey in 2003, played quarterback on the football team. He later graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
In Iraq, Hyde had been deployed in October as an Airborne Ranger-qualified infantry officer with the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division. He was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his Humvee. He was 24.
