Furniture is in Jordan Plumb's blood.
The daughter of the owners of longtime former Modesto antique shop Sarah Francis, Plumb opened Porter 136 in Oakdale at the end of May. The boutique furniture and home décor store has a mix of old and vintage wares. The style is a mix of chic urban and eclectic rustic. Pieces range from large tables and couches to small lamps and specialty soaps.
At 24, Plumb said following in her parents' footsteps came naturally. Opening her own place gave her the opportunity to be her own boss and express her creativity.
"It's the most rewarding thing when someone tells you it looks so good in their house," she said. "It's me picking out (all the merchandise) so it feels really good when they like it."
Never miss a local story.
Plumb runs the 1,800-square-foot shop alone. So far interest in her store has spread through word of mouth. She said customers have compared her shop to those in Napa and San Francisco, and even New York.
While downtown Modesto's Sarah Francis closed about a decade ago, her family is happy to see her get into the business herself.
Oakdale's Porter 136, at 136 N. Third St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 322-3416.

The restaurant is part of a chain owned by Dynaco Inc. Food Services, which also owns the Western-themed steakhouse's still-open Riverbank location.
A company spokeswoman said the closure was because of stalled negotiations with the landlord, and it was unclear whether the Merced site would reopen elsewhere.
