Detectives on Tuesday were looking for three suspects in the shooting death of a 21-year-old man outside an am-pm minimarket last week in Riverbank, including one who is wanted as a suspect in a June attack at a Redding convenience store.
Jah-Kari Phyall, 15, of Turlock, Daniel Pantoja, 18, of Riverbank and Turlock Diaz, 14, of Turlock are believed to have been involved in the shooting death of Chaz Bettencourt.
None of the suspects had been found as of Tuesday evening, said deputy Andrew Winter, a Stanislaus County sheriff's spokesman. He said the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.
Bettencourt, of Riverbank, was shot about 12:40 a.m. Thursday outside the minimarket at Oakdale and Patterson roads. He was with a friend when a fight ensued with the three suspects, according to detectives.
Winter said the friend returned to the store to have a clerk call 911 when he heard shots. Bettencourt was hit multiple times and died at a Modesto hospital.
Phyall was the third suspect identified in the shooting. Sheriff's officials released his name and photo late Monday after serving a search warrant at his home in the 300 block of South Avenue in Turlock. He was not home.
Pantoja and Diaz weren't home when sheriff's officials went looking for them over the weekend.
Clash at Circle K, on street
The Redding Police Department has been looking for Pantoja, who is wanted on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon in a gang-related attack that occurred June 6 at a Circle K store at 2245 Hartnell Ave. in Redding.
The victim was attacked inside the Circle K, according to a Redding police news release.
Less than two hours later, the victim was driving his vehicle when he encountered the suspects who had assaulted him earlier, police said.
The suspects drove past the victim as one of them fired a handgun at him multiple times, police said. The victim was not hit, and the suspects drove away.
Just as in the Riverbank shooting, Redding police investigators used surveillance video to identify Pantoja as one of the suspects. Justin Leslie Plympton, 21, of Redding also is wanted in the June attack.
