The Modesto City Council took the following actions Tuesday night:
Approved an application for Modesto to serve as a host city for the sixth annual Amgen Tour of California in May. Modesto had a stage start for the 2008 cycling race, and a stage finish in 2009 and this year. A local committee raises private funds to pay for the city's participation.
Accepted a $300,000 Office of Traffic Safety grant. Modesto police will use the money to increase enforcement for speeding, drunken driving and motorcycle violations. Besides DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols, authorities will place devices throughout the city to monitor speed.
Ordered staff to apply for a $444,063 state transportation grant for upgrading the traffic signals and other safety features at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing at Seventh and B streets.
Never miss a local story.
Supported Modesto's application with other cities and Stanislaus County for Proposition 84 grant funds. In 2006, California voters approved Proposition 84, which authorized $90 million for planning and incentives to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, improve the air and water, and provide other benefits.
