A man pulled from a north Modesto canal Wednesday night drowned, authorities said Thursday morning.
Darrell Moon, 51, a transient from the Modesto area, was identified by the Stanislaus County coroner's office this morning as the man who jumped into the canal along Briggsmore Avenue near Carver Road after the woman he was with fell in.
Modesto police Lt. Clint Raymer said Moon rescued the woman but could not save himself.
Raymer said initial reports indicated the two may have been intoxicated at the time she fell in.

Shortly before 8 p.m., Modesto police officers and firefighters responded to a report that a man had fallen into the canal.
A few minutes later, firefighters found Moon in the canal just west of Carver, said Modesto fire Battalion Chief Hugo Patino.
He said Moon was not conscious when he was pulled out of the water.
Firefighters began life-saving procedures before the man was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Patino said Wednesday night that the woman who called to report that her friend was in the canal appeared to have been drinking and remained at the scene speaking to police.
