MERCED — The California Department of Veterans Affairs said it will hold its third annual CalVet Women Veterans Conference on Oct. 7-8 in Clovis.
The state agency said its conference committee is planning the program and is seeking donations for the conference, set for the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building.
"Your donation will help to ensure another successful event designed to educate our women veterans about their benefits and health care," the agency said in a news release.
The department said its mission is to serve veterans and their families. California has 2.1 million veterans, and more than 167,000 are women. The conference is an outreach effort to help meet the needs of female veterans.
Never miss a local story.
The conference again will recognize a female veteran of the year from Northern and Southern California at a special banquet.
Its goals are to increase awareness of veteran benefits; facilitate access to health services; discuss gender-specific medical conditions that affect female veterans; provide updates on female veteran research projects; and provide employment and educational opportunities.
Speakers will represent all branches of the military.
The department said it needs donations to make the conference affordable for female veterans.
Donation checks can be sent to Barbara Ward, deputy secretary, women and minority veterans affairs, or Kelli L. Johnston, women veterans program manager for the VA Central California Health Care System, 2615 E. Clinton Ave., Department 111-W, Fresno 93703. The VetFund Foundation 501(c)3 ID number is 205195691.
