SONORA - A 29-year-old homeless woman is in jail after police say she coerced three children she was babysitting to steal $158 in merchandise from a Save Mart store.
Leilani Serrano was arrested Friday evening at the store on charges of felony conspiracy to commit a crime, misdemeanor petty theft and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Sonora police Chief Mark Stinson said. She may face additional charges, he said.
Police said Serrano used three of the five children she was babysitting – ages 10, 12 and 14 – to steal makeup, hygiene products, food and office supplies from the Sonora supermarket.
The childrens’ parents were unaware of what had happened, Stinson said.
“They were shocked that she would (use) their kids to do such a thing,” Stinson said.
