"NBC Dateline" will profile the 2004 death of 85-year-old Hickman rancher Frank E. Craig and the subsequent murder conviction of former Hickman Community Church pastor Doug Porter during a two-hour show Friday night.
The segment is expected to air during the second half of the broadcast, which begins at 9 on KCRA (Channel 3).
Among those interviewed for the piece: some of Craig's relatives, Stanislaus County prosecutor John R. Mayne, Bee columnist Jeff Jardine and several Hickman-area residents who were friends of Craig's.
Porter was convicted of killing Craig four years after the rancher's death.
Never miss a local story.
Prosecutors charged that Porter purposely drove a pickup into an irrigation canal with Craig as his passenger, killing the older man. That accident followed a similar one that Craig survived in 2002, when Porter drove a pickup into a tree.
Craig had entrusted Porter with more than $1 million that Craig had hoped to use to build an agricultural museum. Porter is appealing his conviction.
