Officers arrested a man suspected of robbing two central Modesto businesses with a replica handgun Saturday as he tried to make a getaway from the second robbery, police said.
Ryan Keith Turner, 34, of Modesto was arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery, said Modesto police Lt. Clint Raymer.
Turner matches the description of a suspect who robbed another central Modesto business Friday in the 1300 block of McHenry Avenue, Raymer said, and could face additional charges.
The first armed robbery Saturday occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. at Style Me Salon at 1612 Tully Road, just south of West Briggsmore Avenue.
Never miss a local story.
Raymer said a robber wearing a red hooded sweat shirt and a bandana mask entered the salon holding a handgun. The robber demanded cash from the employees.
He said the salon had no cash, so the robber apologized and left in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt. Police obtained surveillance footage from the business and descriptions of the robber and the getaway car.
Officer Randy Bolinger was assigned to surveillance in the area and to search for the salon robber. Bolinger was driving an unmarked police vehicle.
"We expected the suspect would hit again, because he didn't get any money from the first robbery," Raymer said.
About 12:15 p.m., an armed robbery occurred at May's Bargain Store at 1100 Carver Road, south of West Roseburg Avenue. The robber entered the store and demanded cash from employees.
Raymer said the robber had the same type of handgun and wore the same clothes and bandana covering his face as the robber in the salon. The robber left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt.
Bolinger spotted the car in the area and began to follow it. Raymer said the Bolinger followed the car to a Motel 6 parking lot on West Orangeburg Avenue.
Other officers joined Bolinger and took the driver, later identified as Turner, into custody without further incident. Raymer said the officers recovered the stolen cash and a replica gun used in the robberies.
Turner was staying in one of the motel rooms. Police searched the room and found several people and drugs inside, Raymer said. Those people were being questioned Saturday afternoon.
