The Stanislaus County Office of Education is seeking 63 tutors for after-school programs as part of a one-year grant from AmeriCorps, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, said Vicki Bauman, director of prevention programs at the county office. The tutors, typically college students considering education careers, will work at nine school districts: Ceres Unified, Empire Union, La Grange, Newman-Crows Landing Unified, Patterson Joint Unified, Shiloh, Stanislaus Union, Turlock Unified and Waterford Unified. In addition to the AmeriCorps tutors, SCOE will hire a senior program facilitator and two lead academic tutors to coordinate grant activities. Those interested can apply online at www.stancoe.org. The tutor positions include a $544 monthly stipend, student loan deferment and 60 hours of training. A $2,038 award toward college or student loans can be earned. Applicants must be 18, pass assessment tests or equivalent college courses, and pass a background check and tuberculosis screening.
