Workers at the CVS distribution center in Patterson voted to join the Teamsters Local 386 in Modesto last week. The group voted 310 to 251 to unionize, joining the 1.4 million member-strong Teamsters. All of the center's 613 workers will be covered by the union, one of the largest in the nation. Workers at the other CVS distribution center in the state, near San Diego, already are members of the Teamsters. The union has been working with the CVS employees for two years to organize the group. Gaylord Phillips, secretary-treasurer of Local 386, said the next step will be to petition the company to sit down and begin bargaining for a contract. "We want to have a bargaining agreement that provides them job security, increased wages and respect," he said. "Our contracts tend to provide workers with greater benefits and this one will, too. No doubt we'll be able to improve on their package."
