One of Modesto's two local talk radio stations is shutting down Tuesday, though its owner hopes to reopen KMPH-AM "The Patriot" as the economy improves.
The station went on the air in July 2006, and adopted a talk format in 2008.
Pappas Radio generated some publicity by turning to former Modesto Mayor Carmen Sabatino as a host in May 2007.
Rob Johnson has since taken over as the host of a talk-radio program.
The station's hiatus leaves Clear Channel's KFIV 1360 AM as the remaining local conservative talk-radio outlet.
"Taking our radio station off the air is a decision we were compelled to make only after investigating every possible alternative until, in the face of difficult economic circumstances, no other decision was possible.
When future circumstances permit, KMPH-AM will return to the airwaves," Pappas Radio General Manager Jim Pappas wrote in a letter to listeners and advertisers.
