Columbia College Foundation has passed the halfway mark of its goal of a $266,680 scholarship endowment, thanks to one big gift and matching funds.
Front Porch Inc. of Sonora gave $54,000 to the foundation. Matching funds from the Bernard Osher Foundation added $26,000. Together the gifts will fund four annual scholarships of up to $1,000 for textbooks or other instructional supplies.
Marnie Shively, Columbia's director of student financial services, said several hundred students apply for scholarships each year.
The endowment goal is to fund 25 annual scholarships in perpetuity.
A keynote gift of $40,000 from the Wise Family Charitable Trust kick-started their efforts in December 2009. A gift of $13,500 to the fund earns a $6,500 match, enough to fund one $1,000 annual scholarship named by the donor.
