Private plane makes 'belly landing' at Fresno Yosemite International Airport

A small private aircraft was forced to make a belly landing on the runway at Fresno Yosemite International Airport Sunday after its landing gear failed to deploy.

The Cessna plane was on the tarmac for about three hours, airport officials say, causing five airplanes scheduled for landing to divert to Bakersfield Municipal Airport.

Vikkie Calderon, spokeswoman for the airport, said both passengers on board made it out safely. She said the pilot reported the mechanical malfunction to the airport control tower before landing the aircraft on its underside around 11:30 a.m.

The airport brought in a crane to remove the plane, Calderon said, clearing the runway for incoming aircraft around 2:30 p.m.
