State Treasurer Bill Lockyer has opened a campaign account for lieutenant governor in 2018, but that doesn't mean he'll run for any seat.
It does suggest, however, that the 72-year-old Democrat may remain involved in state politics as a campaign donor long after he retires from elected office.
The former attorney general and state Senate leader had accumulated more than $2.2 million for a campaign for controller next year before he announced last month that he will retire when his term as treasurer ends in early 2015.
Politicians often open campaign accounts for offices they don't intend to seek, using them solely to manage campaign stockpiles.
Lockyer spokesman Tom Dresslar said in an email Friday that Lockyer opened the most recent account to "have a place to park his money for use beyond 2014."
"He wants to make sure he has the ability to support select candidates and causes, or as we like to say, mete out justice," Dresslar said.

Erin V. Peth will be the state Fair Political Practices Commission's new executive director, the watchdog agency decided Friday. The position has been filled on an interim basis since Roman Porter stepped down in 2011. Peth has been deputy legal affairs secretary in the Governor's Office. Before that, she was a deputy attorney general with the state Justice Department.
