Speaker has new spokesman who shifted from Caltrans
Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez is getting a new spokesman: Will Shuck , a former Capitol reporter who most recently was the deputy director of external affairs at the California Department of Transportation.
Shuck succeeds well-known Democratic strategist Steve Maviglio.
Shuck is making the jump from roads and bridges to the legislative branch just as Assembly Democrats head into an election year in which their two-thirds majority is at stake. Also, sometime in the coming year, the caucus will choose a successor to Pérez, who is termed out and running for state controller.
Before joining the Brown administration last October, Shuck had been chief of staff to Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal , D-Long Beach, and then-Assemblywoman Patty Berg , D-Eureka.
Shuck previously was on the other side of the notepad. He covered the Capitol for The Stockton Record and the Long Beach Press-Telegram and began his journalistic career at City News Service of Los Angeles.
