JAY HERBRAND: Airport caught in downward spiral

It has just come to my attention that as of April 1, Great Lakes Airlines will no longer be flying to Las Vegas from Merced. That leaves LAX as the only choice as a destination out of Merced. The number of choices and the quality of service seems to be a catch 22 for a carrier such as Great Lakes Airlines and the Merced region. It is hard to boost ridership and expand destinations when the reliability of a flight happening is so poor. My experience with cancellation of my April flight to Las Vegas, several other delays, bumping from a flight, and flight cancellations only confirms what many residents and travelers from Merced are saying by not flying out of our airport. I hope it changes for the sake of our future and of the city and the county.
