Art Browner: Sudden focus on school gyms is suspect

I found it amusing yet sad to read that the Merced Union High School District has decided to make replacement of the gymnasiums at Merced and Atwater high schools a high priority when there are no funds available. There can be no debate as to why the people within the boundaries of these two schools voted for Measure M and it was because the replacement of the antiquated, unsafe, physical education facilities were part of the equation with regards to funding.

I am not in the position to say whether it was a gimmick, urge or dire need that led to the district redirecting the funds from those projects in order to supplement the new high school, but I can say that it appears to be a direct misrepresentation of the voters' intent. Therefore, to now say that replacement of the gyms are a priority seems to be disingenuous.

I sincerely hope that the district is able to prove me wrong.
