The North American Wetlands Conservation Act is a crucial piece of legislation for Ducks Unlimited and many of our partner organizations such as Delta Waterfowl, Pheasants Forever, The Nature Conservancy and Land Trust Alliance. They all use NAWCA grant funding to protect and conserve our national natural heritage. The act has conserved 27.3 million acres of habitat in North America over its nearly 25-year history with more than 4,500 partner organizations. More than 2,000 projects have received nearly $1.26 billion in federal investments while partner organizations have contributed another $2.61 billion in privately donated matching funds.
I urge Californians to contact their members of Congress and ask them to recognize the important work of NAWCA and that cutting funding is foolhardy and unacceptable. Let them know what a great cooperative of public-private organizations it represents. We need to make sure the bill is reauthorized this year so that private groups can continue to work hard with public administrations to conserve our wildlands and wetlands.
