Jean Aragon: What is this ‘L’ thing?

What is Staples’ advertisers thinking? Staples’ recent print ad asks, “What the L is going on?” A man in Staples’ recent TV television ad asks, “What the hell? What the hell?” Does Staples think it should be crude to get more business?

What is Staples’ advertisers thinking? Staples’ recent print ad asks, “What the L is going on?” A man in Staples’ recent TV television ad asks, “What the hell? What the hell?” Does Staples think it should be crude to get more business? What about children who hear the ad and are left with an indelible association of Staples with “hell”? Several friends have said this advertising is unacceptable to them also. My husband and I used to think Staples was a great store and we have done a lot of business there over many years. Staples needs to clean up its act. The current advertising changes our impression of Staples from a class act to a crass act. Staples should realize that it takes months to gain a customer, seconds to lose one.
