On Oct. 21, 2011, Shadow literally walked into our lives. He joined my dogs and I on our morning walk. A half-starved, pathetic excuse for a dog, he also walked into our hearts. Whatever happened to Shadow at the hands of some disgusting human, only they and God know. It didn’t break his beautiful spirit, Shadow never met a human or animal he didn’t like. That same day Shadow met some of his favorite people: Dr. Kayla Brunner and the staff at Merced Veterinary. He was diagnosed with a heart defect. We went home ready to say goodbye in a short time, but hoping he would have enough time to gain weight and enjoy life for a little while.

Shadow died Saturday. Thank you, Drs. Brunner and Betty Lawson and the staff at Merced Veterinary. Your professional, caring attention to Shadow and the rest of our family is truly appreciated. Thanks also to Franklin Pet Cemetery for your careful, compassionate handling of our beloved family members remains.

To those of you who dump unwanted and sick animals on the side of the road like yesterday’s garbage, shame on you!
