Dan McLeod: Don't cut military funds

I remember a quote from a Vietnam-era F-4 fighter pilot: “Who are these so-called experts? They are those who have been promoted beyond their abilities.” He was referring to the experts who decided not to include a gun on the F-4 Phantom. Their reasoning was that a supersonic fighter would have no use for such a weapon. As it turned out, most air combat remained a subsonic affair and a gun was mandatory. Crews began mounting external gun pods out of desperation. Eventually a Vulcan canon was incorporated in later designs.

Now the so-called experts want to reduce our military to pre-World War II levels. A brief note from history: On Dec. 6, 1941, America was not a superpower. We all know what happened on Dec. 7, 1941. History repeats itself. It is part of the human condition. Tyrants will rise and fall, from Hitler to Putin. There is always someone to fill the void. Today President Obama is systematically dismantling our military. His new strategy seems to seek parity with the world. We should never be in a fair fight. That is the ultimate betrayal of our service members.
