I encourage others to take in the current exhibit at the Merced County Courthouse Museum, “A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California,” while it lasts, through April 19. Artist Laura Cunningham’s studious approach to the subject matter – what California may have looked like prior to European settlement – I found wonderfully effective. We often can feel so removed from the natural landscape, only to be sorely reminded periodically of how dependent we are on the natural processes, such as during this time of drought. The exhibit is a great example of how art can creatively enable us to engage the state of California in ways that, before, may have been unimaginable.
