Dan and Mary Wentz: Lunney will be a capable sheriff

Regarding “Warnke won’t sit behind a desk” (Letters, May 23): The letter seemed to be a personal attack on Pat Lunney.

Regarding “Warnke won’t sit behind a desk” (Letters, May 23): The letter seemed to be a personal attack on Pat Lunney. We are wondering why she made it sound like a negative that Pat is a nice looking man with lots of charisma, who takes care of himself and dresses well. And, “connected” up to his eyeballs – like that’s a bad thing?

Pat is more than administratively capable with all his years of management of people and budgets with the Merced Police Department then director of law enforcement at the Department of Justice and chief investigator at the District Attorney’s Office.

Here’s something to think about: The sheriff is an administrative job. He manages the department for the county. His responsibilities are to run/maintain correctional facilities, the coroner’s office, court security and patrol. He also must have budgetary knowledge and “connections” to get legislative things done in Sacramento.

Pat has endorsements of many law enforcement professionals, including the correctional officers union. Guess they want someone with knowledge and experience to help get problems solved. We are retired employees of the department. We know Pat would be a very capable sheriff and do an outstanding job.
