Bill Barkman: Return your calls, City Council members

At Atwater’s City Council Aug. 11 meeting, there were good points shared in favor of and opposed to having one council meeting a month and combining commissions that don’t communicate into one seven-person commission.

At Atwater’s City Council Aug. 11 meeting, there were good points shared in favor of and opposed to having one council meeting a month and combining commissions that don’t communicate into one seven-person commission. The biggest concern was that of access to commissioners and council members.

Access to political figures is a function of two things – citizens need to show up for meetings even if the agenda doesn’t matter to them, and city officials need to answer email, letters and return phone calls.

I didn’t take an interest in City Hall until I was asked to sit on the Measure H Oversight Committee. My bad! But when I first moved to Atwater and tried repeatedly to connect with city leaders, no one returned a call or an email except for Mayor Joan Faul and former Councilman Nelson Crabb. Anyone granted the privilege of serving Atwater on the council or a commission needs to honor that trust with a return email or phone call and with face-to-face access.
