Re “Band Event Promotes Sex” (Letters, Aug. 18): The writer is so misinformed on so many levels, I am not sure where to start. First, RespectiCon was not presented by Planned Parenthood. The event was put together by the Middlestate Feminists, WE’CED and Building Healthy Communities, in response to the high number of teen pregnancies in our county.

Second, this was a community-based education program for teens and their parents that provided sexual health information in a supportive environment/safe space for teens.

Third, Planned Parenthood was only one presenter of many. The topic of abortion was not discussed.

Fourth, as the name of the event implied – respect for yourself, others and self-esteem was the theme. Fortitude and firm courage to say “no” in our sexually pervasive society. Yes, birth control was discussed, as was abstinence, and the consequence of behaviors. Please do not confuse knowledgeable behavior as hedonistic and narcissistic.
