Last year at this time, I wrote about the Chinese New Year celebration in Merced's Chinatown in the 19th century. I mentioned that the Chinese immigrants believed the firecrackers and incense could drive out the drought devil out during the celebration. This looks to be a year when we will need a lot of firecrackers and incense to chase out our dry spell. One weekend of rain and snow is not enough!
