One person injured in Winton house fire

A house fire reported early Saturday morning in Winton injured one person and killed four dogs, according to Merced County Fire Department/Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters responded to the 7100 block of Center Street at 2:30 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Gabriel Santos.

The fire began in the car port area of the home, and extended into the interior of the residence.

The heat from the blaze caused the exterior of an adjacent home to catch fire, Santos said. The fire also brought down power lines in the area, prompting a response by PG&E personnel.

Santos said the victim, a 45-year-old woman, burned her hand while trying to rescue one of the dogs from the fire. Firefighters contained the fire within 30 minutes.

The blaze caused moderate damage, estimated around $80,000, to the home where the fire erupted. The adjacent home sustained minor damage.

Santos said six people were displaced from the home where the fire started, and four were displaced from the adjacent home. The Red Cross responded to provided housing assistance for those affected by the blaze, Santos said.

Twelve firefighters, five engines, a water tender, a rescue vehicle and a battalion chief responded to the scene.
