A 43-year-old woman was killed Friday morning after being struck by several cars while trying to run across southbound Highway 99 near Chowchilla, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The name of the victim hasn't been released by the Madera County coroner, pending notification of her family.
The CHP said the woman was walking on the right shoulder of Highway 99, south of Avenue 24, about 6 a.m. The woman then tried to run across the freeway, officers said, heading east across the southbound lanes.
Brian Fuentes, 24, of Chowchilla was driving a 2001 Saturn southbound on Highway 99 about 60 mph in the fast lane, according to the CHP. Fuentes told officers he saw a woman carrying a gas can run directly into the roadway ahead of his vehicle, but he was unable to stop.
The front of Fuentes' car struck the woman. The CHP said she was thrown onto the roadway, where she was struck by two more cars. The woman sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
All of the drivers involved in the incident immediately pulled over onto the shoulder, according to the CHP.
