Homicide reported in Winton

WINTON – A 22-year-old man is dead after being shot Monday afternoon while sitting in car, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.

The name of the victim hasn't been released, pending notification of his family or next-of-kin by the coroner's office. Deputies say no suspects have been arrested.

The incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the 7400 block of McConnell Street.

Witnesses told authorities the victim was sitting in the driver's seat of a white 2009 Kia when he was approached by a person who fired several rounds from a handgun into the driver’s-side door, said Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff’s spokesman.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim in the car with gunshot wounds, MacKenzie said. Deputies performed CPR until an ambulance came and took the victim to Mercy Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The shooter then fled on-foot.

The investigation is ongoing, MacKenzie said, and it's unknown if the shooting is gang related.

The death is the third reported homicide in Merced County this year. The first homicide this year was reported on Jan. 1 in Delhi, after 67-year-old J.D. Reed was found shot to death inside his home. The victim's son, 35-year-old Curtis Reed, was arrested as the suspect in that case.

The other homicide was reported Feb. 4 in southeast Merced, after 61-year-old George Aragon was beaten to death by around seven to 14 people. No suspects have been arrested in that case.
