One Merced man was taken into custody at the residence where he lives early today during a child pornography investigation, the Police Department reported.
Elith Christopher Ramos, 21, of 27 S. Coffee St. was arrested for possession of child pornography after police detectives served a search warrant at the same address at about 9 a.m.
Detective Jeff Eastman, of the Police Department’s high-tech crimes unit and a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, is the lead investigator in the case. The investigation was launched about two months ago.
At that time, Eastman was notified that about 25 files of child pornography was being downloaded to a computer with an internet user’s address that was tracked back to a Merced home.
After getting a search warrant, police said, detectives went to the home and found a desk top computer in the suspect’s bedroom. Detectives said a preliminary forensic search of the computer revealed it contained child pornography.
Detectives also seized other computers and electronic equipment found at the residence.
During questioning, Ramos didn’t admit the desk top computer belonged to him but indicated he was the primary user. His grandmother told police she purchased the computer for him.
Ramos admitted watching adult pornography on the computer but denied watching or downloading child pornography. He also asked investigators why they weren’t pursing the individuals who made the child pornography.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to call Eastman at (209) 385-4735 or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
