Shots fired after Merced man interrupts car break-in

A Merced man was threatened last night while confronting two people breaking into a relative's car, police reported Sunday.

The incident happened 11:20 p.m. on Saturday in the 1200 block of P street, according to Sgt. Rodney Court.

The victim told officers he heard noises outside and went to investigate. When he went outside, he interrupted two people in the process of breaking into the car.

When the victim confronted the men, one of them pulled out a small handgun, Court said. The victim told police he backed away when he saw the gun.

The second suspect ran southbound on P street, Court said. The victim reported seeing the second suspect loading an amp and speaker box into a car parked on P street, near 12th street.

As the armed man ran away, the victim said he heard at least two more shots fired.

Witnesses told police they heard a total of three to four shots fired, but officers could not find any shell casings.

The men were last seen driving a late model light gold or pewter-colored four door Camry or Lexus. The car was last seen southbound on P street, Court said.

According to the victim, the armed man is described as a 25 to 28-year-old Latino man, 5’10 inches and weighing 180 pounds.
