A 25-year-old man was killed and his 18-year-old brother was injured during a shooting Thursday night in Livingston, police said.
The victim who was killed has been identified as Jose Sandoval of Livingston, according to police.
The shooter remains at large. The incident was reported just before 8 p.m. in the 1300 block of E Street. Police say a car carrying three males and a female went to the scene. The car stopped, and the occupants got out to assault the brothers.
One of the occupants fired at the brothers, as the others engaged in a fight. Around seven rounds were fired. Sandoval received fatal injuries, while the 18-year-old suffered two bullet wounds to the abdomen and was taken to a local hospital, according to Lt. Chris Soria. The younger brother is expected to recover.
The motive remains under investigation, but police said a fight was reported around 5:56 p.m. in the 700 block of First Street. Police believe the 25-year-old brother may have been involved in the fight, and that incident may have led to the shooting. Police said the shooter’s car is described as a newer model grey Nissan with chrome rims.
The death was the first homicide reported in Livingston this year, and the ninth reported in Merced County.
Police initially reported the shooting was a drive-by, but after further investigation clarified the shooter had gotten out of the car.
Livingston police are asking anyone with information to call Sgt. Ray Fong at (209) 394-7916. Tips are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
