A man was shot in the 1700 block of Conestoga Drive early this morning during an attempted robbery.

The 39-year-old victim told police that he was sleeping in the back seat of his Suburban when a Hispanic man between 20 and 30 years old knocked on the passenger-side window and demanded his cell phone, according to the Merced Police Department.

When the victim refused to hand over his cell phone, the suspect shot the victim in the upper-body and fled the scene, police said.

The victim was transported to a Modesto hospital for treatment and was later released, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Detective Chris Russell at (209) 385-4707 or the Merced Police Department tip line at (209) 385-4725.

Tips can also be sent via anonymous text message to the police department by dialing “TIP411” (847411) and including the word "ComVIP" as the keyword in the text message.
