Merced County Sheriff's detectives reported finding the body of a man in a canal in east Planada on Monday.

Sheriff Mark Pazin said the identity of the man hasn't been released, pending notification of his family or next-of-kin.

Pazin said detectives believe the body is that of a man who went missing last week after losing control of his ATV and crashing into the canal near the dead end of Merced Street.

Witnesses said no one got out of the water after the ATV crashed. Deputies responded to the scene after the man went missing, but were unable to find him.

The body was found by detectives Jeff Coburn and Aaron Rosenberg on Monday about a third of a mile away from where witnesses said the ATV went into the water. "We won't know much more until we do a complete autopsy," Pazin said.
