A man in his early 20s was injured Thursday morning after being shot on Santa Fe Drive in the Atwater area, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The motive remains under investigation, although Sheriff Mark Pazin said there are gang overtones in the case.
Deputies and Atwater police responded to the scene in the 5400 block of Santa Fe Drive at 6:20 a.m. after receiving a shots fired call. Pazin said the victim was walking to a strawberry field, where he worked, when he was approached by two males. After the discussion, one of the assailants pulled a gun and fired 10 to 15 rounds at the victim. The victim was shot four times.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated. Pazin said detectives are not releasing details about the shooters at this time.
