For the second time this winter, delays at a new shelter are leaving Merced’s homeless out in the cold.
The non-profit Merced Community Action Agency announced Tuesday that it was cancelling its shelter’s Jan. 30 grand opening. This marks the second such postponement for the new shelter, which will be the city’s first permanent year-round facility for both men and women.
Originally the 65-bed shelter was due to open Dec. 14. That date was pushed back after copper wiring was stolen from the construction site. Now the shelter can’t open because the building hasn’t passed inspection.
