Merced boys defeat Pleasant Grove with late comeback

Rarely do freshmen find themselves in the situation Merced’s Ulonzo Gilliam was in on Wednesday night. The Bears point guard stepped to the free throw line with the score tied and 21.8 seconds left on the clock. Gilliam calmly sank two free throws and then helped force a turnover on defense to help No. 6 seed Merced come back from a 19-point deficit to defeat No. 11 Pleasant Grove 56-52 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs at Clemons Court.
