GAME NOTES: The Western Carolina Catamounts will try to continue their winning ways at home when they host Southern Conference foe the Elon Phoenix at the Ramsey Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Catamounts won their conference opener on Thursday night, throttling UNC- Greensboro in a 72-51 final, to improve to 6-0 at home this season. Trey Sumler scored 16 points and Mike Brown came off the bench to net 13 to lead Western Carolina, which forced a season-high 23 turnovers, turning them into 35 points in the rout.

Sumler averages 19.5 ppg to lead the Catamounts in scoring, while Brandon Boggs adds 10.6 ppg and Tom Tankelewicz averages 10.3 ppg. As a team, Western Carolina puts up an average of 74.3 ppg.

Overall, the Catamounts have won two straight and three of their last four outings overall, and they will need to continue the momentum against Elon, which was the pick early on to win the Southern Conference regular-season title.

Elon last took the court this past Tuesday when it was whipped by seventh- ranked Duke, 86-48. Ryley Beaumont and Lucas Troutman each tallied 11 points for the Phoenix, who committed a season-high 22 turnovers and shot a season- low 35 percent from the field. Not surprising considering the level of talent they faced from the Blue Devils.

Troutman leads all Elon players in scoring, tallying 15.2 ppg and he adds a team-best 5.7 rpg to his stat line. The 6-foot-10 forward has scored in double figures in all but three games this season, shooting an impressive 55.6 percent from the field in the process.

Sebastian Koch is next on the team with a 13.1 ppg average, while Tanner Samson (12.2 ppg) and Ryley Beaumont (10.3 ppg) round out the double-digit scorers for the Phoenix, who enter conference play averaging 79 ppg and shooting 48.6 percent from the field.

This bout marks the SoCon opener for Elon, which is just 2-3 in true road games this season.

That said, expect the Phoenix to hand the Catamounts their first home loss.
